It’s music festival season again and Coachella is kicking off in just a few short weeks. Maybe you bought a ticket but don’t know which artists to see. Maybe you think you know who you’re going to see and are wrong. Maybe you’ve never listened to music before. Whoever you are, I’ve put together a list of six bands you MUST see at Coachella 2016.
Penis Mightier is the stage name of novelist Benjamin Andolphus, who has turned his writing process into a full-on musical experience. Be sure to stop by the Mojave Tent to catch this genius as he writes away on his typewriter with a microphone catching every stroke. Once you get past the crass name you realize that, while the sounds may be projected from his hands, the feelings in the music are ones that have been inside of you all along.
David is a 16-year-old boy from Salt Lake City whose only wish in life was to go to Coachella. His mother said he could go, but only if she could come and play her piano for 30 minutes. After a huge social media campaign with over 100,000 retweets, David and his mother both got their wish. Catch her on Sunday afternoon playing all your favorite piano classics, which she has mastered through over 20 years of teaching lessons at her local senior center.
LCD Soundsystem (Khakis set)
LCD Soundsystem is back together and everyone, including me, is thrilled! But I’m not nearly as excited for their Saturday headlining set as I am for their Friday afternoon “Khakis set.” As you know if you’ve ever heard the band, they have a huge set of deep cuts written entirely about khaki pants. Lead singer James Murphy has called the article of clothing his only true inspiration, and I’m excited to see which khaki hits the band will chose to play!
The most controversial artist billed on this year’s Coachella may also be the most interesting. Despite a huge public outcry, the festival has stood its ground in booking world-famous terrorist organization ISIS for a rare live performance. No one is sure what exactly the music is going to sound like, but the group’s spokesman has said “they really like the idea of blowing up the music industry but are also really into Steely Dan right now.” I don’t know what that means, but I can’t wait to find out!
Box Boy is the music project of Kevyn Wylliams. He just sits in a box and screams for 45 minutes to an hour. If this doesn’t sound like your kind of music, I suggest you still give it a chance as his single “Let Me Out” is widely considered to be one of the most moving songs ever written.
Stomp & Fetty Wap
Finally, two of music’s biggest acts are joining together for a HUGE set at Coachella this year. Personally, I’ve always found Stomp to just be a bunch of garbage cans banging together. And Fetty Wap, well… he knows what he did… but that doesn’t mean I’m not curious to see how this train wreck unfolds! I’m only recommending seeing this mish mash of dog shit on the off chance the stage collapses during their set! Yes! I can see it now! This is going to be best Coachella ever!
